Introduction

Patients after maxillary resection due to cancer require prosthetic treatment using prostheses equipped with obturators, which prevents foods and liquids escaping to the nasal cavity and enables the reconstruction of speech functions. The obturator is an integral part prosthesis and is relined with elastic material. The aim of the work is to present the stages of perform procedures thermoformed obturators on a prepared postoperative prosthesis.

Case Description

The method is based on making a restoration using a prosthesis already used by the patient, the basis of prosthesis remains with the teeth unchanged. Only the part of the prosthesis filling the postoperative defect is changed. Erkodur thermoformed plates ERKODENT ® were used, thickness 0.6 mm. Forming the shape of the obturator was carried out using the Erkopress device from ERKODENT ® . Duplication the shape of the obturator was made with Dublosil 24 silicone Salvemedical. Connection of a thermoformed obturator with a denture basis was made of GC's Unifast Trad resin.

Discussion

The presented work describes the method of perform an obturator, where thermoformed material replaces traditional elements. Additionally, this obturator is detached from the denture plate, which makes much easier hygiene procedures. Use of thermoformed material also influences the weight of the prosthetic restoration, which is particularly important in case of complete dentures.
